The Eliasson Exhibit Will Have You in Awe!

Mikroskop

You wouldn’t believe the incredible exhibition that had me in awe for days. I can’t wait to tell you all about it…

First, I would like to point out that Berlin is known for its buoyant art scene. If its antiques at the beautiful Museumsinsel in Mitte, contemporary art at the infamous Hamburger Bahnhof, or even the historical Jewish Museum, Berlin embraces art with both arms wide open.

The Martin-Gropius-Bau belongs at the top of the list of must-see museums. Located in the center of the city just around the corner from Potsdamer Platz, the large old building hosts various exhibitions simultaneously; right now there are two. On the top floor you’ll find Frida Kahlo’s Retrospective, and on the ground floor is the impressive installation that had me in awe: Innen Stadt Außen by the Danish Artist Olafur Elissaon.

Eliasson, who first came to Berlin in 1994 to indulge in the many spheres of the art scene, discovered an endless horizon of possibilities for his work. The creativity he found here forced him to stay in Berlin. Eliasson loved the diversity of this city, from the former Russian parts of east Berlin to grungy Kreuzberg, this city offered many different facets and was easy living at the same time.

Your Blind Movement

In 2008, he began working on the exhibit Innen Stadt Außen which now is being exhibited at the Martin- Gropius-Bau.

Eliasson employs ordinary objects we find in our metropolis and redefines them in his own way. By combining light and shadow, stones and soft textures, as well as mirrors, he creates a new sensational feel of the city we live in. He got me when I unexpectedly walked into a room that was full of colored mist. From one room to the next, the colors would change from red to purple and from blue to yellow, but other than the colors, I couldn’t see a thing, not even my own hands!

It was an amazing experience in these rooms, knowing that other people were with me, but actually we were in this alone. As Damien Hirst once said about his own art: “I just hope that when people come and see the exhibition, I want them to be just grabbed and thrown around a bit by visual things.” This could be said about Olafur Eliasson’s work as well, who, of course doesn’t experiment with sharks in hydrophyl, but still wants us to be thrown around by visual things. His art gives visitors a chance to see what he loves most about this city. Moreover, he allows for his admirers to create their own art as they, for instance, cast shadows on the walls. The magic Eliasson creates in his installation is marvellous, and I ask you to come and see the exhibition for yourself!
